Don't just stick to the motorway. Here are the best ways to explore the North Island with your Auckland campervan rental:
1. The Volcanic Rim Loop
This is the classic. Drive south to explore the glow worm caves at Waitomo, visit the Shire at Hobbiton, and smell the sulphur in Rotorua. It is a loop packed with geothermal wonders and Maori culture.
2. Wild West Beaches
You don't have to drive far to feel isolated. Head to the Waitakere Ranges and visit Piha or Karekare beach. These black sand beaches are famous for their rugged beauty and surf (just watch the rips!).
3. The Adventure Highway
If you have 1-2 weeks, take the State Highway 4 loop. It takes you deep into the Ruapehu region for hiking and skiing before circling back through Taupo. It's the ultimate North Island sampler.
